Remove personal and valuable items first
Take out documents, photographs, jewellery, medication, keys and anything promised to family. Check drawers, coat pockets, tins, lofts and the backs of cupboards before the clearance pile is formed.
Use one clearly marked room or locked vehicle for the keep pile. A simple red, green and undecided label system prevents several people making conflicting decisions.
Separate reuse from waste
Clean furniture and working household items may be reusable, although upholstered furniture normally needs an intact fire-safety label. Arrange donations before the final day because acceptance depends on condition and available space.
Keep electricals, metal, wood and general contents distinct where practical. Do not mix paint, chemicals, gas bottles, asbestos, clinical waste or unknown liquids into ordinary household bags; tell us about them first.
Photograph the whole property
Show every room plus the loft, garage, shed and garden. Include stairs and the route to the van. Complete photos let us estimate volume and crew time without discovering a second load after arrival.
For bulky single items, show the full item and the exit route. Fridges should be empty and defrosted, and loose bed or wardrobe parts should be kept together.
Check who takes responsibility for the waste
